New Year's Day Party Menu

Here is my New Year's Party Menu for 2017.  Wow, just writing 2017 seems so new and reminds me how fast time moves.  I am looking forward to creating a beautiful new year full of goodness and light to share with everyone!

 Cleanup From the Party

This year we asked another family over to have and elegant Brunch at 1:00pm and watch football into the evening hours.  For the holidays I pull out all the stops and try to set the most gorgeous of tables.  After all, If I don't use it now, then when?  The meal featured both our English and Norwegian ancestry.  We started by nibbling on appetizers while we waited for the prime rib to be finished.  It was simple, but well chosen delicious cheese, olives and herring.  We must always have pickled herring on New Years Day.  The roast sits thirty minutes to rest.  It continues to increase in temperature as it rests and redistributes the juices.  It is a step that should not be rushed.  While it rested, my son mixed up the Yorkshire pudding and put it in the oven,  which provided the eggy component of the meal.  I found handcrafted sausages by Josef Brunner to be some of the best I ever tasted.  The Brussels sprouts are so good roasted and were not bitter at all.  I tossed them with a thick balsamic vinegar.  Pickled cucumbers and lefse, a Norwegian wrapping bread, were the Scandinavian dishes.  I love to offer many toppings that people can mix and match with whatever they wish on their plates.  There are no rules with lefse.  Dessert was a creamy butterscotch pots de crème with candied bacon and later on we enjoyed the flaming of the plum pudding which is the traditional English Christmas pudding.  Our guests had never seen it before, so it was especially fun to see their delight.

The starred recipes are in my digital book, Comfort Food Cookbook: Highlighting American, German, Norwegian, and English Heritage Recipes which is now available on iBooks®!
