ComfortFoodKim's Farm Market Report:
Reporting My Favorite Things From Leesburg Farm Market
Leesburg, Va
March 25 and April 1 2017
This past week in northern Virginia seemed to be the week when you know it is Spring, because you could smell it! I live in a place where many trees flower and bloom, giving off the most heavenly scent. Not just as you walk by, but it is everywhere as soon as you step outside! So if you go for a walk, you will be surrounded by perfume!
The spinach looked great at Shenandoah Seasonal today, so I brought some home. I am also getting the pea and sun shoots from Shenandoah Seasonal every chance I get for my lunches during the week. I tried Number 1 Sons pickled watermelon radish as a topper for the microgreens. It was crispy and peppery! Read about how they naturally ferment their food at Number 1 Sons. They have so much to choose from!
Spring also means maple syrup! I use it for so much more than topping pancakes and waffles! I use it in barbecue sauces and as a natural sweetener instead of sugar or corn syrup. We are lucky to have a local farm nearby that comes to the farmer's market called Vale of the Blue Ridge Maple Farm. It is so good! I love supporting local farmers and love the products!
Can't forget the protein! -Picked up a beautiful brisket from Mill Road Farm today! I do believe my Big Green Egg is calling and wants to do some serious work! And as always I picked up my eggs from Harpers Ferry Family Farms. Here is a recipe where I used these delicious eggs, an Alsatian Apple Tart. Where do the eggs go, you ask? This is a tart that has the apples surrounded by a delicious custard!
So there you have my highlights from the farmer's market today and last week. I am finding that I am needing less produce from the grocery store than ever before! What a beautiful thought!
